  • The Dead Dolls House 181 Upper St, London N1 1RQ (map)

Presented by London Craft Club

Do you have a love for stationary, that you just can't help but get excited by a shiny new notepad? Or are you a fan of ditching your laptop and scribbling down all of your notes, but are then ending up with piles of random pieces of paper and clippings that are really easy to lose? Or maybe you dream of making a beautiful scrap book from scratch for yourself or as a special gift?

This class may be for you! It will help you learn the basics of bookbinding, presenting you with your own starter kit so that you can go away and make more. It gives you the chance to be creative and make books that are personal for you. .

What to expect?

Amber will teach you everything you need to know about creating your first hardback book. You'll create one "signature" style (a folded stitched set of pages) and bind it in paper and book cloth. There's then a choice of lovely papers and book cloth to finish it off with and you'll leave with a lovely notebook you can use, a starter kit with instructions, and most importantly inspiration to make some more!

Your ticket includes:

All materials.
A choice of decorative papers.
An awl and bone folder.
A bookbinding needle and thread.
A cotton tote bag to take your work home.
Printed instructions to take away with you.

Fun Fact:

The craft of bookbinding is said to have originated in India, where religious sutras were copied on to palm leaves (cut into two, lengthwise) with a metal stylus. The leaf was then dried and rubbed with ink, which would form a stain in the wound. The finished leaves were given numbers, and two long twines were threaded through each end through wooden boards, making a palm-leaf book.
