Finding a Fulfilling Job

Finding a Fulfilling Job

shutterstock_275800298.jpg

HOSTED BY The School of Life

One of the most extraordinary and yet quietly routine assumptions of our age is that we should be able to find work that we can not only tolerate for the money, but profoundly appreciate - work with a high degree of purpose, camaraderie and creativity. We see nothing strange in the remarkable notion that we should try to find a job we love.

This one-day workshop insists that, in order to stand any chance of honouring our desire for meaningful employment, we will need to lavish concentrated brain power, time and imagination on its underlying complexities.

What to expect?

We examine how our expectations about a ‘good job’ were formed. We probe whether these are grounded in reality, and consider a helpful alternate notion of ‘good enough’ work to guide our ambitions. We finish up by considering some of the downsides of all jobs, even those we consider the most fulfilling.

Our culture has set us a devilish problem: promising us that fulfilling jobs exist while, at the same time, leaving us woefully unprepared for how to discover our own aptitudes and appetites. The purpose of this day is to help to correct an epochal problem which quietly gnaws at our lives and tramples upon our legitimate hopes. We come away better able to understand our talents and to move forward using the opportunities that are open to us.

This one day workshop brings together the best of The School of Life’s Work curriculum into a single high intensity session. You can explore our full curriculum here.

(Please be aware, Finding a Fulfilling Job contains material from the following individual classes: How to Identify Your Career Potential, How to Fail, and How to Be Confident).

Date:  19th May 2019

Tackle Your Inner Critic: Increase Your Confidence in Work and Life

confidence

HOSTED BY The Guardian

Learn how to lessen the power of your inner critic, feel more confident, fulfil your potential and increase your resilience in this encouraging evening class.

Most of us are guilty of being harder on ourselves than we are on others. The things our inner critic tells us about our progress and worth are things we would never say to a friend - and this can have devastating effects on our personal and professional development. We are living in an epidemic of self-criticism; everyone suffers with it, even very successful people.

If you want to fulfil your potential and learn how to realise your self-worth, you will need to battle your inner critic - but this can be a daunting task; how do you shut off that negative voice?

Enter leading life coach Fiona Buckland, who has worked with organisations including the School of Life, the United Nations, Google and many more. In her evening class, she will show you how to break the vicious cycle of self-doubt and setbacks, providing you with skills and techniques that you can integrate into your everyday life.

You will come away feeling confident in your abilities to reduce the power of your inner critic, diminish negative self-talk, and with an increased connection to those inner resources that energise and inspire you into positive action - even in challenging times. You will also learn how to be more present, to notice your habits of negative thinking, and how to take action with courage and compassion so that you can be more positive, effective, resilient and successful in every aspect of your life.

Making Relationships Work

Making Relationships Work

relationships

HOSTED BY The School of Life

We expect love to be the source of our greatest joys. But it is also, of course, one of the most reliable routes to misery. Few forms of suffering are as intense as those we experience in relationships. Viewed from the outside, love could be mistaken for a practice focused almost entirely on the generation of despair.

The problems begin because, despite all the statistics, we continue to think of love as an enthusiasm, rather than a skill that can be learnt. One of the gravest errors we make around relationships is to imagine that they aren’t things we can get wiser or better at.

In fact, as in all areas, we can improve how good we are at loving another person, which is what this one-day workshop will help us to do. It will teach us to understand why we are all, in our different ways, tricky to be around and prone to sabotage love.

When difficulties strike in relationships, we often fall prey to the idea that it is the other person’s fault. The sadness must be someone’s fault: and, naturally enough, we conclude that the blame has to lie with our partner. We avoid the far truer, darker yet gentler possibility that this one-day workshop will help us to perceive: that we are trying to do something very difficult, which we need to learn to get better at.

Together, we bury the Romantic intuition-based view of relationships and learn to practice and rehearse our skills at love.

What to expect?

In Making Relationships Last we will learn:

  • That it is normal for love and sex to have a complex connection, and that they may not always belong together.

  • That we are all rather flawed, and accepting this can increase the amount of tolerance and generosity in circulation.

  • That we will never find everything we need in another person, nor they in us - not because of these flaws, but because human nature makes this impossible.

  • That we need to make immense efforts to understand one another.

  • That intuition alone can’t get us to where we need to go.

In most relationships, we are trying to do something enormously difficult without the bare minimum of support necessary. It is not surprising that – very often – we have troubles. In this intensive day of study, we learn how to acquire skills and attitudes that can lead to a new, more hopeful future for love.

This one-day workshop brings together the best of The School of Life’s Love curriculum into a single high intensity session. You can explore our full curriculum here.

Improving Your Emotional Intelligence

Improving Your Emotional Intelligence

pietro-tebaldi-559946-unsplash.jpg

HOSTED BY The School of Life

Emotional Intelligence is the quality that enables us to negotiate with patience, insight and temperance, the central problems in our relationships with others and with ourselves. It can manifest in partnerships as a sensitivity to the moods of others, a readiness to grasp what may be going on for them beyond the surface, and to enter imaginatively into their point of view. It shows up in relation to ourselves when it comes to dealing with anger, envy, anxiety and professional confusion. Emotional intelligence is what distinguishes those who are crushed by failure from those who know how to greet the troubles of existence with a melancholic and at points darkly humorous resilience.

What to expect?

This one-day workshop is designed to equip us with the core skills of Emotional Intelligence. We learn:

  • Why our minds have a hard time understanding themselves.

  • How to map and understand our anxieties.

  • How to make sense of the hurts and resentments we carry.

  • How and why we characteristically respond to frustration.

  • How much we like ourselves.

  • How easily we trust others.

  • What our true identities are.

Emotional maturity doesn’t have to remain a vague pipe dream. It is, when we approach it more closely, reached by a number of coherent steps and insights that can move us beyond our habitual state. To develop emotionally involves:

  • Learning to understand and sympathise with ourselves.

  • Taking proper stock of our childhood influences.

  • Communicating our flaws and eccentricities to others in good time.

  • Interpreting others beyond what they have directly said to us.

  • Recognising the hard edges of reality without being destroyed by them.

  • Accepting our needs for consolation and assistance.

  • Achieving a necessary degree of confidence.

  • Being able to detach ourselves from turmoil and take pleasure in local circumstances.

  • Knowing how to fruitfully despair without giving up on existence.

This one-day workshop brings together the best of The School of Life’s Self curriculum into a single high intensity session. You can explore our full curriculum here.

(Please be aware, Improving Your Emotional Intelligence contains material from the following individual classes: How to Develop Self-Knowledge and How to Be Sociable).

Talk - What's Law got to do with 'it'*?

Photo by Ben Rosett on Unsplash

HOSTED BY Coffee, Cake & Kisses

A conversation on connections between law and sex.

The discussion will revolve around themes that may stray across consent, family law and its obsession with sex, sexbots, the disruptive power of sex in legal and academic practice, ethics, philosophy and sex.

What to expect?

The conversationalists will be Victoria Brooks and Marc Mason.

Victoria is a writer and researcher on ethics and sexuality. She is interested in sex generally, but particularly in relation to identity, female sexuality, sexbotics, and making philosophy sexier.

Her book Fucking Law: the search for her sexual ethics is out in June 2019 for Zero Books. It can be pre-ordered here: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Fucking-Law-search-sexual-ethics/dp/1789040671

Marc is an academic whose research looks at barristers: he's most interested right now in a project looking at how LGBTQ+ barristers work with their identities and sexualities.

He also used to be a family barrister and is intersted in exploring further the way that law manages to worry really quite a lot about sex.

Cake, hot and soft drinks will be available from the venue. BYO is allowed; corkage applies.
